Sleep and Rest

By Luke Alley, PT, DPT ยท

A man in a white robe sleeps peacefully on white pillows.

Sleep quietly influences everything. Energy, focus, mood and stress tolerance all depend on it, and when your sleep timing becomes predictable, many other habits get easier.

Predictability Beats Effort

Small changes like a consistent wake time, lower stimulation in the evening and a calmer sleep environment often help more than trying harder to fall asleep. Predictability is often the missing ingredient, not effort.

Most adults do best with about seven to nine hours a night. If you are getting far less, the fix usually starts with the hour before bed, not the bed itself.

Sleep Habits to Start With

  • Wake up at the same time every day, weekends included
  • Pick a lights-out time and set a reminder 30 minutes before it
  • Dim screens and lights in the last hour of the evening
  • Keep the bedroom cool, dark and quiet
  • Move caffeine earlier in the day

Why an Evening Routine Is Often the First Domino

Going to bed 30 minutes earlier on weeknights sounds small. But better sleep means more energy the next afternoon, which makes a workout or a home-cooked dinner more likely, which makes the next night's sleep easier. If sleep problems are severe or long-lasting, talk to your doctor, as coaching does not diagnose or treat sleep disorders.
